The following information is about Chromosome.

Chromosome Defined

Chromosome refers to the structure in the cell composed of a very long molecule of DNA and associated proteins called Histones. At SGD, if a locus has been physically mapped, the chromosomal coordinates will appear under the Sequence Coordinates category with a link to the ORF Map, on the Locus page. The Roman numeral to the right indicates the chromosome to which the locus maps. There are 16 chromosomes in S. cerevisiae. The Genomic View is a graphic representation of the entire yeast genome that allows you to display a chromosomal features map, physical map, or combined physical and genetic map.

Low levels of brain chemical may lead to obesity

Published August 27, 2008, 3:07 pm, PhysOrg

A brain chemical that plays a role in long term memory also appears to be involved in regulating how much people eat and their likelihood of becoming obese, according to a National Institutes of Health study of a rare genetic condition.

ORIGINAL ARTICLE: Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor and Obesity in the WAGR Syndrome

Published August 27, 2008, 2:30 pm, New England Journal of Medicine

This study examined genotype and body-mass index in patients with the Wilms' tumor, aniridia, genitourinary anomalies, and mental retardation (WAGR) syndrome. The related genes WT1 and PAX6 are on chromosome 11p13, centromeric to brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), an important gene in energy homeostasis. BDNF haploinsufficiency was linked to childhood-onset obesity and reduced levels of ...

Gene Found For Rare And Deadly Chidhood Cancer Neuroblastoma

Published August 27, 2008, 5:16 am, Medical News Today

US scientists have found that mutations of a gene called anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) were behind most incidences of hereditary neuroblastoma, a rare and deadly childhood cancer, and they also discovered that the same mutations played an important role in high risk forms of non-inherited incidences of the disease, which are more common.

Gene That Causes Childhood Cancer Neuroblastoma Is Found

Published August 26, 2008, 5:16 am, Medical News Today

Scientists have discovered gene mutations that are the main cause of the inherited version of the childhood cancer neuroblastoma. In addition, the researchers found that the same mutations play a significant role in high-risk forms of non-inherited neuroblastoma, the more common form of the disease.

Gene That Causes Childhood Cancer Neuroblastoma Is Found

Published August 25, 2008, 2:15 pm, Science Daily

Scientists have discovered gene mutations that are the main cause of the inherited (familial) version of the childhood cancer neuroblastoma. In addition, the researchers found that the same mutations play a significant role in high-risk forms of non-inherited neuroblastoma, the more common form of the disease. Because drugs are already in development that target the same gene in adult cancers, ...

Identification of ALK as a major familial neuroblastoma predisposition gene

Published August 24, 2008, 10:01 pm, Nature

Neuroblastoma is a childhood cancer that can be inherited, but the genetic aetiology is largely unknown. Here we show that germline mutations in the anaplastic lymphoma kinase ( ALK ) gene explain most hereditary neuroblastomas, and that activating mutations can also be somatically acquired.

Scientists have discovered gene mutations that are the main cause of the inherited (familial) version of the childhood cancer neuroblastoma. In addition, the researchers found that the same mutations play a significant role in high-risk forms of non-inherited neuroblastoma, the more common form of the disease. Clinical trials are planned to target the gene product in children with neuroblastoma.
